Reading for Emotional and Academic Development
About the READ Project
The READ project stands as a beacon of innovation in the educational landscape, aiming to harness the transformative power of bibliotherapy to nurture the emotional and literacy development of children aged 8-11. At its core, READ is about opening new pathways to learning and understanding, using literature to explore and express emotions, build empathy, and foster critical thinking.
In an era marked by digital distractions and educational challenges, READ offers a grounded, research-backed approach to enhancing the holistic development of young learners. Through this initiative, we are committed to equipping educators with the methodologies and resources to implement bibliotherapy effectively, ensuring that the next generation possesses the technical skills and emotional intelligence to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
Project Overview
Motivation: The inception of the READ project was driven by a critical observation in contemporary education: the growing need for a curriculum that not only imparts academic knowledge but also cultivates social and emotional competencies. With children increasingly exposed to digital screens and facing unprecedented academic pressures, there is a palpable decline in opportunities for emotional development and literacy engagement. Recognizing this gap, READ seeks to introduce bibliotherapy into educational settings as a strategic tool to address these challenges head-on.

Our Approach
Bibliotherapy Explained
Bibliotherapy, at its essence, is the therapeutic use of literature to support mental and emotional well-being. In educational settings, it involves strategically selecting and using books and reading materials to address and explore feelings, foster empathy, and develop coping strategies among students. This approach enhances emotional intelligence and bolsters literacy by engaging students with texts that resonate with their personal experiences and challenges. Bibliotherapy can be particularly impactful for young learners. It offers them a
safe space to explore complex emotions and situations through characters' experiences in stories,
thereby promoting understanding, acceptance, and personal growth.
